HAIR TRANSPLANTATION

Hair transplantation is an operation that aims to replace hair lost for various reasons with new hair. Although the general name is hair transplantation, hair can also be transferred to beard, eyebrows, eyelashes and, less commonly, other body parts. For hair transplantation, the patient's own hair/body hair is taken and transferred to the missing area. The first hair transplantation began in Japan in the 1930s, and methods for the procedure have improved over the years. Thanks to developing technology, it has become possible to perform hair restoration in such a natural way that you will not know that it is transplanted unless the patient tells you about it.

The most common reason for hair transplantation is male pattern hair loss. This type of hair loss affects 30-50% of men. This type of hair loss, which can have hereditary characteristics, can affect not only men but also women. In individuals with male pattern hair loss, hair that is not affected by hormones on the back of the head, on the nape of the neck, is removed and transplanted to the areas with hair loss. Since the transplanted hair is not affected by hormones, it does not thin or fall out. Of course, this type of hair loss is not the only reason for hair loss. Loss may occur in many medical conditions and hair transplantation can be applied for the treatment of appropriate cases.

How to do hair transplantation?

First of all, we learn about our patient's expectations by talking to each other. Then, we present our mutual ideas and plan the front line hairline together and make drawings accordingly. Then we move on to the first stage required for hair transplantation. Generally, the roots of the hair located on the nape of the neck, which are not affected by hormones, are removed. The area from which the hair is taken, that is, the hair follicles taken from the donor area, are called "graft". If there is not enough hair in the donor area, other parts of the scalp and/or some body hair can also be used for transplantation. The grafts taken are placed in channels opened with special techniques in the area of hair loss. Although it varies depending on the size of the area of hair loss, the process is usually completed within a few hours. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. When the procedure is completed, the donor area is dressed and the patient is discharged. It is not expected to feel pain after the procedure. After the procedure, on the third day, the bandages are removed and the first wash is performed in our clinic. The patient can usually return to work within a week at most after the procedure.

Which Method Do We Use for Hair Transplantation?

Graft Retrieval In our clinic, we use the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method, which allows hair follicles (grafts) to be removed one by one, to harvest the grafts. The micro motor we use during the process also shortens the processing time. Since the grafts are taken from each location one by one, in equal amounts and in a uniform distribution, there is no scar left behind as in the FUT method.

Opening Channels

Another important point of the hair transplantation process is the opening of the channels where the grafts will be transplanted. For a realistic and natural look, the channels should be opened at the appropriate frequency, preserving the natural direction and angle of the hair. We use sapphire tips to open channels in our clinic. The use of a sapphire tip prevents damage to the scalp while opening the canal, allowing the area to heal in a much shorter time than the classical method. For a much more natural appearance, it is necessary to ensure that the channels show minimal irregularities at the front hairline, as usual, and that the channels are opened to form a spiral in the area at the top of the hair (the area popularly called clumsy).

Storage and Placement of Grafts

It is important to keep the time between grafts taken and placed in the canals short for the transplanted hair to hold. In our clinic, the collection of grafts, their preparation for placement in the channels is done by a large team. The aligned grafts are stored in a nutrient liquid at 4 degrees and the grafts are placed in the canals as soon as possible. Structurally, there are 1-4 hairs in a hair graft. When placing grafts, it is important to place grafts containing 1-2 hairs in the first two rows of the front hairline and 3-4 hairs in the channels at the back to provide the closest image to reality.

What to Expect on Hair Transplant Day?

When you come for hair transplantation, the hostess of our hair transplantation unit welcomes you; gives you information about the transaction; It presents you the transaction consent form and answers your questions if you have any questions. After this process is completed, you will be directed to the hair team for transplantation preparation. Drawings and planning are made by our expert, taking your ideas and expectations into consideration. This planning includes detailed information about both determining your front line hairline and the number and frequency of placement in which areas of the hair follicles to be transplanted. Following the planning, your hair is shortened, local anesthesia is applied to the procedure area and the procedure begins. When removing hair follicles, punches with diameters ranging from 0.6-0.7-0.8 mm are used.

Special engines can also be used during the process. The extracted and collected grafts are arranged appropriately and kept in special solutions to ensure that they remain alive during the transplantation period. Immediately after the grafts are collected, the process of opening channels in the area to be transplanted begins. The most important thing to consider at this time is the density and direction of the hair follicles. The harmony of the opened channels and the transferred hair follicles is very important for you to have a natural appearance. This makes the process much more successful in direct proportion to the professionalism and experience of the team.

The process takes between 4-10 hours, depending on the width of the area to be transplanted and the number of grafts.

What Should Be Considered After Application?

The care to be given to the planting area after the application is among the important determinants of the success of the planting. The area should be carefully protected from impacts, friction and sunlight, especially for the first 10 days. To prevent tissue healing from slowing down and to avoid drug interactions, smoking and alcohol should be avoided for the first 10 days. Your first hair wash is done in our clinic on the 2nd or 3rd day after the procedure. Hair should not be cut in the transplanted area for the first month. In addition, heavy exercise should not be done for the first month, and baths and saunas should be avoided. Post-transplant control frequencies and supportive treatments will be determined specifically for you and our team will follow you regularly.
